How website designers make their money — what you should know:
Generally, website designers make their money using one of two different business models:
In the rental model, the designer works with you to design your site. They will also buy and manage hosting for you and invoice you regularly. They will, of course, charge extra for this service. By making a profit on managing your hosting, they can afford to charge less up-front website design costs. The advantages of this model for you are that you don't have to deal direct with a hosting provider, and your initial costs may be quite low. It may seem very tempting to buy a website for £100 or less. But there are some disadvantages. All your eggs will be in one basket. You'll be paying considerably more every year for hosting. And the site may not belong to you, so if you were let down by your designer or wanted to take your site elsewhere for any reason, you couldn't. You'd have to start all over again. |
In the purchase model, the designer again works with you to design your website. But then they ask you to register hosting with a separate provider. When the site is finished and uploaded onto the Internet, the designer invoices you for their web design fees and hands over the copyright to you. The hosting provider continues to host your site and will invoice you yearly for this service. Usually the original designer will also offer a support service to help you with changes if necessary in the future. So this designer makes their money by charging you for their designing, editing and other support services. In this case creating a website and its associated services may appear rather more expensive. However, your ongoing yearly costs for hosting will be considerably cheaper, because you're buying direct from the hosting provider. And you have the flexibility to take your site to another designer for updating, for instance, if you want to do so. You pay more upfront, but less on an ongoing basis — and you're free to do what you want with your own site. |
Domain name and hosting fees
So there are pros and cons for each model. We think you should know how things work before you choose a designer — and we think you should know some figures too.
Currently we use the purchase model. We recommend a hosting provider that we've found to be reliable and moderately priced, and we show you how to arrange hosting for your site — it's very simple. Ongoing hosting for a site for a small business will cost about £70 a year, or around £6 per month. So you would need to add this ongoing cost onto our website package fees, which you'll see above.
